Petrozavodsk Paper Machinery Corporated (trading as Petrozavodskmash Corp.) is the biggest machinery building enterprise in Russia, which specializes in manufacturing of equipment for pulp and paper and petroleum and chemical industries.

The company premises occupying an area of 67 ha are situated on the shore of Onego Lake which is connected by water ways with the Baltic, White, Black and Caspian Seas making it possible to transport large-size machines and apparatus over water practically all over the world. It is also to foreign customers’ advantage to place the orders at the works situated only 300 km from Finnish border.

More than forty years ago a solemn ceremony of Tyazhbummash factory first stone laying down took place. In the past decades at the cost of productive activities of Petrozavodskmash Corp. the basic goal set at the company start has been achieved, that is pulp and paper mills in USSR and, therefore, in Russia and countries of CIS have been fitted with the new home equipment. The new market conditions bring new challenges. For last 10 years Petrozavodskmash Corp. have managed not only to save but also to promote our unique production possibilities. It enables us to keep the competitive edge with western companies in equipping and upgrading pulp and paper mills in Russia and several foreign countries. We have kept in full volume our production facilities comprised of a foundry, welding, machine & assembly and consumer goods productions.

The foundry, besides other products, produces water-jacket castings second-to-none in size and weighing up to 116t including cylinders up to 11m long x 2m diameter and up to 5m long x 4,25m diameter. The foundry is equipped with induction furnaces of 8 tons and 25 tons, general purpose cranes and pouring cranes of up to 250 and 140 t load-carrying capacity respectively.

In the welding production there are mechanized production lines permitting to manufacture various products in carbon and stainless steel of different grades as well as in titanium. Apoparatus up to 100m long x 8,0m diameter and weighing up to 600t are available. For large-size product dispatching, fully assembled or by as much as possible integrated blocks, our enterprise has a special cargo berth with all the necessary load-carrying facilities.

Our machine and assembly shop is fitted with the machinery, which permits to machine parts of large-width and high-speed paper machines. In a wide use are electric erosion treatment, laser hardening, electrochemical polishing, programmable heat treatment by high frequency current. Switching to market economy we have managed not only to maintain our traditional product line but also to change over to new equipment for power stations, various chemical apparatus, pumps, railway tank car boilers, large-sized metalwork for port terminals, farm implements etc. We have obtained necessary certificates giving us the right to manufacture critical products to recognized international standards.

The pulp and paper making equipment market keeps being a traditional priority for our enterprise. For the time being Petrozavodskmash Corp. is the only machine-building company in Russia and CIS capable of delivering the complete equipment set for a pulp and paper mill on a turn-key basis, from a timber yard to paper/board machine. Chemical and petrochemical equipment as well as high-teck cast-iron castings of our make is also well known in Russia and abroad.

In the past decades the company has delivered or heavily rebuilt 63 paper-and board machines. 86 corrugated production board lines have been delivered. Besides, our customers have got thousands of equipment units: 153 pulp grinders, 154 thickeners, 215 barking drums, 214 chippers, 1609 disc refiners, 125 chips screens, 52 complete cooking plants, 169 digesters, 111 chests of different types, 140 bleaching towers in stainless steel and titanium and many other types of equipment for pulp and paper industry. Besides, we have supplied 224 heat exchangers for pulp & paper and chemical industries, 110 column apparatus for petrochemical industry.

It should be highlighted that in the sales volume for the past decade the company is going to approach the level comparable with that we used to keep back at the USSR times. Annually 35-40% of deliveries are export.

Now we can see that certain traditions have been formed at the enterprise, permitting to speak about technological culture, continuity of work as generations change, factory team responsibility for their work quality. We have a good few of young stuffers whose business acumen makes them possible in the nearest future to become managers in large designer, marketing and production subdivisions.

Petrozavodskmas Corp as one of town infrastructure making up enterprises of Petrozavodsk for which the company keeps about 3500 workplaces, also plays an important role in economics of Karelia. The company is going to integrate deeper with a timber industry complex of Karelia. Petrozavodskmas Corp contributes a lot to a cultural infrastructure of Petrozavodsk and Karelia. The company has created in metal a memorial Cross of Conciliation at the entry to Mortal Valley near Pytkyaranta, a monument to marshal Zhukov, sculptures from western brother-cities on Lake Onego enbankment in Petrozavodsk and many other monuments, sculptures, and other elements of urban design.

Petrozavodskmas Corp. has been so far one of a few examples of a gigantic machine-building enterprise successful switching to production activities under new market conditions in Russia. Having a solid reputation among the foreign customers Petrozavodskmas Corp. contributes to creating a positive image of the Russian industrialists for would-be western investors. Apart from a steady economic position, growing wages, the company in many respects has maintained a social infrastructure, thus for instance keeping its own health center and children's summer camp.
